A full day dedicated to observing high-Andean mammals while continuing the gradual acclimatization process necessary for the higher elevations of the Altiplano. Excursions are conducted exclusively during the daylight hours, exploring different sectors of the pre-puna around Putre.

During our explorations, we will search for species such as the Northern Andean Deer (Taruca), Guanaco, Mountain Viscacha, Vicuña, Armadillos, Skunks, Southern Gray Fox, and Cururos.

This morning, we conduct our final exploration of the pre-puna ecosystem around Putre before beginning the ascent to the Altiplano. Our destination is a traditional Aymara ranch, strategically located within one of the most important Andean Mountain Cat search areas in northern Chile.

Upon arrival, participants will have time to settle in, rest, and continue adapting to the higher elevation. The afternoon is intentionally kept relaxed to ensure optimal acclimatization before our nocturnal activities begin.

Before sunset, we begin our first Andean Mountain Cat search session. Field activities will occur throughout the night and until dawn, taking advantage of the species' peak activity period and maximizing our chances of observation.

Over the next four days, our efforts focus entirely on questing for the Andean Mountain Cat, widely regarded as one of the most enigmatic and threatened small felines on Earth. Operating from our strategic base in the Altiplano, we scout a diverse range of high-altitude habitats meticulously selected for their potential to harbor this iconic species.

Field activities are conducted primarily from dusk until dawn, aligning with the peak activity periods of these elusive felines. This intensive nocturnal schedule is designed to optimize detection rates and maximize the quality of our wildlife encounters, while also providing chances to observe a variety of other specialized high-Andean mammals.

Our explorations traverse several legendary protected areas and secluded sectors of northern Chile, including Lauca National Park, Las Vicuñas National Reserve, and the Salar de Surire Natural Monument, as well as carefully scouted regions within the pre-Andean foothills and the vast Altiplano scenery.

Daylight hours are reserved for rest, recovery, and reviewing field data. This balance is essential for maintaining the focus required for our dedicated nighttime search efforts throughout the journey. Departures are strategically synchronized with the New Moon phase, ensuring the deep darkness necessary for the effective use of thermal viewers during our nocturnal wildlife searches.

After completing our wildlife surveys across the Altiplano, we descend to the beautiful Codpa Valley, an oasis nestled within the arid landscapes of northern Chile.

We remain based in Codpa, conducting wildlife surveys and nocturnal explorations throughout the valley and its surrounding habitats. Our primary focus continues to be the search for the Andean Mountain Cat and Pampas Cat, while also providing opportunities to observe other species adapted to this unique environment.

After breakfast, transfer from Codpa to Arica Airport for your flight to Santiago.
